How To Select A Pressure Transducers
The pressure of a liquid or a gas is measured by a pressure sensor in many different industrial and pumping applications. Constant Pressure control systems use a pressure transducer to measure the pressure and this is used control a valve or pump speed to keep the pressure constant.
Selecting the proper pressure sensor for any application requires a close look at the following criteria:
Construction: Packages ranging from small plastic enclosures designed for mounting inside electronic equipment, to standalone stainless steel packages suitable for harsh industrial environments. Generally, the diaphram is internal to the transduce offering maximum protection, but for hygenic installations, a flush diaphram is required.
Segregation: The pressure sensor may be used with a corrosive and/or high temperature medium that may damage the sensor unless there is an isolation stage incorporated.
Accuracy: Pressure instrumentation is available in a wide range of accuracies. High accuracy devices usually have improved performance both with temperature changes and over time. Greater stability comes at a premium price.
Range: Pressure tansducers are available form -1 bar (vacuum) to greater than 1000 Bar or equivilent other units.
Temperature effects: Temperature changes have the greatest effect on a pressure sensor’s environmental performance. Most manufacturers provide temperature compensation specification that define thermal effects over a given range. Performance shown as a coefficient or error band is guaranteed over that temperature range. Outside of that range, larger errors should be anticipated. In some installations, particularly agricultural applications, the temperature can get below zero degrees C and this can result in rupturing of the diaphram, body or lines supplying the sensor. Some sensors are designed for low temperature operation or storage.
Vibration: Some installations are on machinery that can subject the sensor to high levels of vibration and shock loading. This can be damaging to some sensors.
Hydraulics: Applications measuring the pressure of hydraulic oils can be subjected to very high presure transients. These can be smoothed by the use of hydraulic snubbers or pressure vessels.
Outputs: sensor outputs are available in industry-standard, millivolt, voltage, or current signals. Digital outputs with communication capability are available as well. The passive 4-20 mA output is the simplest since it is a two-wire connection. A voltage output is a three wire connection and is more easy to wire incorrectly. 4-20 mA circuits are more noise imune that voltage circuits so should be used in preference to voltage outputs where there is elecrical noise.
Units: Pressure tranducers can be scaled for most pressure measurment units. Common units are KPA, Bar and PSI.
Connections: There are a wide range of connections and threads that can be used for pressure transducers.
