Car Battery Chargers
Every driver has likely experienced having a car battery go dead on them at least once since they do lose their charge now and again. To restore a rechargeable battery to full power, use a battery charger and get the vehicle up and running again. Relatively compact, car battery chargers take up little space on a work bench or even in a car. Cordless battery chargers have their own internal 12-volt battery from which power is drawn to recharge car batteries. Chargers that run off electrical power require a 120-volt outlet in order to work.

Both a starter motor and its electric ignition are needed to start a car, and both rely on the car’s battery for power. Batteries also power the vehicle’s lights, heater pump and sound system. The battery is constantly being recharged at a slow rate as the car runs thanks to the alternator, basically an on-board generator. This generator keeps the battery charged as long as the battery is functioning properly. But even that component can’t keep a battery from dying once it starts to fail.
Battery chargers typically have the ability to charge either 6-volt or 12-volt batteries. Car and truck batteries are of the 12-volt variety. Battery chargers are designed to power up a lead-acid car battery at different speeds. The gentlest way to keep a battery at full power is to use a trickle charger, a device that recharges the battery at the same rate it loses power. If you are storing the battery outside of the vehicle, this type of charger is good for maintaining its charge. Other chargers work much faster in a matter of hours, although this can eventually take its toll on the battery’s performance.
Once the optimal voltage has been reached, better car battery chargers will automatically switch over to a trickle charge. This way, the battery won’t get overcharged. AC-powered chargers plug into a standard outlet and essentially send an electrical current through battery, thereby repowering it. Two leads, one positive and one negative with clamps attach to the respective battery terminals, and the charger is plugged in. Depending on the device, it may include a spark-proof design and self-resetting circuit for safety.
