USING A CNC ROUTER AT HOME
With increasing interest in CNC machinery for home use has come greater demand for smaller, ‘desk-top’ style routing equipment.
More and more people are becoming aware of the flexibility, versatility and affordability of these machines, and are increasingly finding a multitude of applications for them for hobbies and for DIY projects around the home.
The smaller ‘desktop’ models can generally run off household 120 voltage and have a small 1 – 2 hp engine. These can fit on an ordinary table or workbench and cost in the region of $2000 but this price depends on a number of elements. Delivery charges vary – and if it’s a used cnc machine, then the cost could be even lower. Plus, the software on these home-use machines is generally fairly easy to use and doesn’t require any previous CAD experience.
For some traditionalists however, the idea of using a machine to create what has always been a craft, dependent on the skill, hard work and patience of the woodcarver is an anathema. Is it possible that the prevalence of small, home-based cnc routers is killing the woodworking tradition? What will happen to the skilled carpenter who used to spend hours and days chiselling out fine details when a machine can churn unique designs out in the blink of an eye?
No, it’s unlikely that a cnc machine will replace the traditional carpenter. But what it will do, is give the DIY enthusiast carte blanche to update, upgrade and enhance the aesthetics and functionality of a home. The list is endless – from doors to furniture, panelling to signage, wooden headboards to cabinets and much, much more.
What’s more, a hobby could easily turn into a profitable little business if the user discovers a market for a product. It could a unique front door, an interesting carved wooden box, house numbering or lettering etc etc. Unlock your creative potential and it could take you places.
The accuracy, reliability, versatility and flexibility of a cnc router makes them a very attractive asset for home use and for commercial purposes – and as the smaller models have become more affordable, demand has grown. Commercial cnc routers still command the lion’s share of the market, say Perth cnc equipment supplier, Procam with the primary applications being signage, cabinetry, furniture etc. However, with the development of smaller, more user-friendly cnc routers, the technology is now literally in the hands of ordinary people around the world.
So what’s going to happen to the old-fashioned carpenter, who, with chisel in hand, sawdust flying, sits hunched over his delicately carved creations? Well, people are never too old to learn – and even old dogs, and old carpenters can learn new tricks with CAD and CNC routers!.
