Upgrade Your M14 Rifle
The M14 rifle and its civilian counterparts the M1A and SOCOM 16 have gained a almost legendary status as perhaps the best battle rifle of all time. Despite the Clinton regime’s efforts to to have US Military M14 stocks cut up in the 1990s, this remarkable rifle is arguably seeing more service than it ever did. The M1A is more popular than ever and a whole industry has built up out of taking this 1957 vintage rifle and adding 21st Century capabilities that revolutionise its use in combat.
One thing that has really come on in firearms design is the variety of muzzle attachments. The Smith Enterprise M1A SOCOM 16 kit enables you to switch between a very effective Vortex flash hider and an equally efficient muzzle compensator. The Vortex flash hider has slanted slots that allow residual propellant to burn off and thus reduce flash, protecting your night vision even when firing full auto. Muzzle climb is controlled by the compensators side facing ports which direct gas to reduce muzzle climb. Both components thread into a replacement gas block and can be easily exchanged. Brownells sell a gas block wrench to accomplish fitting. The resulting configuration places the front sight at the same height as the USGI unit and you can either mount your USGI front sight or a more modern replacement unit like the Smith Enterprise tritium illuminated front sight. Machined from 8620 bar stock, the muzzle attachments are heat treated to be hard on the outside and tough on the inside whilst the gas block is made of 1144 stressproof steel to withstand the temperatures to which it is subjected. A matte black parkerized finish is then applied.
The Amega Ranges M1A Scout Mount is a replacement for the issue handgoard that bolts securely to standard spec. M14 and M1A rifle barrels adding a length of MIL STD 1913 Picatinny rail on which you can mount intermediate eye-relief ‘scout’ scopes, red dot and holographic sights. Users report a significant increase in accuracy due to the vibration dampening effect. The mount also absorbs and sheds heat and enables you to use the issue iron sights. It can also take a flashlight mount of varying length on either side at 45 degrees enabling you to mount lamps, lasers or even another red dot sight like the Aimpoint T-1 as a back-up. This US made, brilliantly designed and engineered kit will enhance the appearance of your SOCOM 16 as well as its function.
Troy industries have built up a great reputation for their range of rail interface systems and back up iron sights. Troy have also lead the way in designing truly innovative performance enhancements for the M14, M1A and SOCOM 16. The Troy M14 Stock or M14/M1A Modular Chassis System is a two part chassis with tunable bedding block that puts the butt slightly above the line of the bore. This helps control recoil to the extent that muzzle climb is eliminated. If you want to fit a compensator go ahead, if nothing else it will look suitably martial, but it will do little esle. Follow-up shots are much, much faster with this stock than the USGI infantry rifle stock. Picatinny rails with numbered slots are provided at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock for maximum flexibility. The Troy MCS offers a single unbroken top rail that allows the co-witnessing of BUIS. You can put any AR15 stock or pistol grip on the Troy MCS. With this system you can have an M14 with M16 ergonomics.
