BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CNC ROUTERS
Just what is this cnc routing technology that seems to have become the flavour of the month?
CNC machines are essentially automated cutting machines that used computerised controls to design and cut a diversity of materials into shapes and features with consistent accuracy, even when multiple units are cut. Computer software is used to create the designs and to make the tool paths for the machine to follow – enabling mass production of identical units at high speed.
Many different industries use cnc machining to cut a wide variety of materials (including metals, plastics and wood) – and these range from the aerospace and automotive industries, the furniture and cabinet making industries to the signage and woodworking industries plus everything in between. The range of design possibilities is infinite.
A level of technical ability is required for operating a cnc machine, but most reputable suppliers and manufacturers will provide comprehensive support and training. Software upgrades are necessary as designs and requirements get more complex.
CNC machining technology used to be limited to large businesses who had the funds and the expertise to purchase and operate the large machines. However, modern cnc routers come in all sizes and across the affordability spectrum bringing them into garages, DIY workshops and small business premises and opening up a new world of opportunity.
In the past, professional craftsmen used labour-intensive hand tools but with the advent of accessible automated cnc router technology, they are able to produce error-free, complicated products at high speed and of consistently high quality.
The cnc controller and computer system is the ‘heart’ (and the brain!) of the machine as it dictates the design and the direction in which the motors move. Traditional cnc routers can move and cut in three directions, which are commonly referred to as the X, Y and Z axes.
But there are different sizes and levels of cnc routers available. At the lower end of the scale, the 2-axis machine is generally used in domestic applications whilst for standard industrial applications, a 3-axis machine is usually sufficient. Four and five-axis cnc routers are used for more complicated products and can cut objects into three-dimensions. The 3 and 4-axis routers are used by most small and medium sized businesses.
The availability of cnc router technology has enabled many business to not only improve productivity, improve outputs, improve the quality of product and reduce waste, but it has also enabled many enterprises to expand their product offering.
